Role Overview
An Oiler is primarily responsible for supporting the smooth operation of the ship’s engine room by assisting with machinery maintenance, lubrication tasks, and general technical support. The position requires strong attention to detail, mechanical awareness, and the ability to follow strict safety procedures.
Because ships operate continuously for long periods at sea, the engine room must be maintained 24/7. The Oiler ensures that all moving parts remain properly lubricated and that the machinery remains in optimal condition throughout the voyage.
This position is ideal for individuals who have prior experience in engine room operations and are familiar with marine diesel engines, auxiliary systems, and basic mechanical maintenance procedures.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of an Oiler may vary depending on the vessel and operational requirements, but generally include the following duties:
1. Machinery Lubrication and Routine Maintenance
One of the primary responsibilities is to apply lubrication to engine components and auxiliary machinery. This helps reduce friction between moving parts, prevents overheating, and extends the lifespan of equipment. The Oiler must ensure that lubrication schedules are strictly followed and that proper types of oil or grease are used according to technical instructions.
2. Inspection and Monitoring of Equipment
The Oiler is required to regularly inspect machinery and engine room systems to identify any signs of wear, leakage, vibration, or abnormal operation. Early detection of mechanical issues is essential to prevent serious damage or operational failure. Any irregular findings must be immediately reported to the duty engineer or Chief Engineer for further evaluation.
3. Logbook and Record Maintenance
Accurate documentation is an important part of the job. The Oiler must record daily operational data such as oil levels, temperature readings, machinery condition, and maintenance activities. These records help ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations and provide valuable information for engineering analysis and future maintenance planning.
4. Assistance in Repair and Maintenance Work
In addition to routine tasks, the Oiler assists marine engineers during repair operations, troubleshooting activities, and equipment replacement procedures. This may involve handling tools, cleaning machinery parts, preparing equipment for maintenance, and supporting technical teams during engine overhauls or inspections.
5. Safety and Environmental Compliance
Safety is a top priority in the maritime industry. The Oiler must strictly follow all onboard safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), adherence to emergency protocols, and compliance with environmental protection standards. Preventing oil spills, minimizing waste, and maintaining a clean engine room environment are key responsibilities.
Candidate Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Must hold complete and valid seafarer documents (including STCW certifications where applicable)
- Preferably with a valid U.S. visa or Schengen visa (advantage but not mandatory)
- Minimum of 18 months of sea service in the applied position (Oiler or related engine room role)
- Last contract completion (last sign-off) should not be more than 9 months ago
- Must have international vessel experience

Candidates who meet these qualifications are expected to have strong discipline, teamwork skills, and the ability to work under pressure in a marine environment.
